Tutorials Traps

Info

Traps are a common mechanism in Survival Multiplayer (SMP) built by players to kill other players or mobs automatically. The following is a list of basic traps with a short tutorial that often assumes the reader has a working understanding of the basic concepts required to build the trap. Traps are considered a subset of mechanisms This article may need cleanup to comply with the style guide. Please help improve this if you can. The talk page may contain suggestions. The art of trapping

Traps are devices designed to automatically slay or capture an entity (Commonly called mob traps/farms) or players, either instantaneously or over time.

Most traps on this page can be created without too much hassle, but some require MCedit or cheats for speed.

Fundamental traps

All traps in here only catch newer players, but are fundamental ideas that capture the essence of branches of trap creation.

Anti-Totem Trap

Most trap effects can be negated with a Totem of Undying, which will save the player if a fatal hit is taken. This design takes into account the possibility of the player thinking it`s a trap and bringing strong armor and a totem of undying.

Self Operating Pitfall

This trap is simplicity itself. no redstone, no commands, no manual activation, just good old fall damage!
step 1. Gather 8 wood (chest), 25 gravel/sand, 24 carpet (optional), and 24 2 block high flowers (any will work).
step 2. Dig a 5x5 hole to a desired depth, leaving one layer of dirt 3 blocks down.
step 3. Place the flowers on the layer of dirt, and the gravel/sand on the layer above that.
step 4. (optional) Place the carpet around the gravel/sand to conceal the blocks, and place a chest in the center.
step 5. (caution) Be very careful to remove the layer of dirt, without updating the gravel/sand.
step 6. wait until a careless player opens the chest, and watch them fall to their doom!
tip: consider building a decoy house around the trap to fool players into thinking they`re raiding a base, this makes the carpet much more inconspicuous.
tip: consider adding hoppers at the bottom of the trap to collect the loot.

Trick Trap-The concept of confidence

This trap may include loss of precious items, such as golden apples so use if you are rich and can only be made in creative.

1. Set a chest (not trapped) and put diamonds or rich stuff in it 2. Then put TNT on the walls, making your raiders think it will blow up in certain situations 3. Then put another room with a iron door but don`t put a pressure plate behind and put two spawners or more (with any mob and hide it!) 4. Put another chest (again not trapped) and put more valuable stuff 5. The raider will think they are safe and go for the chest but wait for a nasty surprise!

Noob + Pro Chest drop trap

First, dig a 2x2 hole until you reach bedrock. Place 4 hoppers, one per block on the 2x2 hole. Lead the hoppers into chests, enough to store a full inventory of items. Then, make a way up to the top where the hole is. Around the hole, place 4 double chests (so 8 chests in total). The player may try to sneak to the edge of the chest to look down the hole. Because the chest is smaller than a regular block, the sneak function will not prevent you falling. They will die of fall damage and their items will fall into the hoppers and chests, where you can collect them.

Fake chunk error

Dig a 16 by 16 hole (preferably in line with real chunks) at least 23 blocks deep and connect it to base containing a chest to store loot and possibly a furnace to smelt ores (it is recommended to wear at least iron armor and equip an iron sword, although leather and wood would do, given mostly only beginners will fall into it), and then add a bait like a sign saying "free diamonds!!" or put a 1 block thick layer of coal ore (as it is the only ore to spawn at surface height, or maybe iron as other ores are quite suspicious) to disguise it as a stone basin so when they mine the ores on top of it or when they jump in they die of fall damage, if they don`t die of falling, (possibly due to feather falling enchanted boots or ender pearling down/up) then kill them with your sword. If you feel that you have more technologically advanced and you don`t feel like you need this trap anymore you can make a player or mob farm using it. You can add railways leading into it or mines with a mechanism to push players down if you can afford it. it takes time to create but can be profitable if done correctly.

Digging your own grave - tricking with trust

Ask someone if they could dig down at a spot, you lost many diamonds there and they could take half. When they get far enough, you can cover them with gravel or sand!!!! You can also use lava for a more dramatic death.

Falling sand

This trap requires:

  • Sand or gravel (any number),
  • Trapdoor,
  • Big drop (15+ blocks),
  • A spade (of any kind).

Dig a hole fifteen or more blocks deep. Then place one trapdoor at the top three upper blocks. Then place one or two blocks of sand. When the target walks on the sand, break the trapdoor. POOF! Target falls into hole, staying there for later use. Or instant suffocation.

Note: This may not work as you would expect it to. You can use things that only work when a chunk is loaded, you can hide a bunch of TNT in a house that only blows up when a player loads the chunks!

Fundamental TNT trap - the concept of landmines

You will need: A block, TNT TNT Transparency Partial (cannot attach other blocks) Luminance No Blast resistance 0 Tool Any tool Renewable No Stackable Yes (64) Flammable Yes Drops Itself Data value dec: 46 hex: 2E bin: 101110 Name tnt TNT is a block minecraft , and a pressure plate.

The template for the second variation.

Place a pressure plate with at least one block of TNT behind the plate. When a player steps on the plate, the TNT TNT Transparency Partial (cannot attach other blocks) Luminance No Blast resistance 0 Tool Any tool Renewable No Stackable Yes (64) Flammable Yes Drops Itself Data value dec: 46 hex: 2E bin: 101110 Name tnt TNT is a block minecraft will be activated and set off. This is the most fundamental TNT trap in minecraft and so all other TNT traps stem from this one`s concept. Another method would be to dig four blocks down, on the second block down, put one TNT. Above that, put one sand or gravel. Then a pressure plate on that. If a player or mob steps on the plate, the TNT will activate, the sand will fall, and the player or mob will be trapped in a hole with primed TNT. The con of these traps is that after each use the player would have to rebuild it.

NOTE: The block MUST BE SAND OR GRAVEL!

Noob wants all the trees

This is a simple trap that has TNT rigged up to a tree so when the player is harvesting all the trees so that other players can`t have them, the player is blown to smithereens! Yay!

Exploding door trap - concept of camouflage

For this trap you will need: A lure for players,(Chest, diamonds, etc.) TNT, a door (Iron is better but wooden works too), a pressure plate, a second pressure or button. Optional: sand/gravel. (Gravel is better if the pressure plate is stone). To make this trap dig a small tunnel or make a small house with the lure inside. Next, at the entrance put the door with the button or pressure plate. On the inside side of the door dig down two blocks, more if using the gravel/sand. Then go to the top of the pit and at the second top block place TNT. Then cover up the TNT (similar to the landmine seen above). and enjoy the show. The idea is that someone will cautiously open the door and see the pressure plate. They will think the pressure plate is just for the door and walk in.

$$$@@@$$$Harmless$$$@@@$$$ trap

You will need: 9 TNT, 1 wooden pressure plate, 1 piston, 1 block of sand or gravel, 1 lever,1 block of stone (not cobble) and 4 redstone dust.

1. Dig down 3 blocks.

2. Place 1 block of stone beneath you.

3. Dig a channel 4 blocks long

4. Put a wood pressure plate on one end.

5. Put redstone leading to the other end.

6. Dig a 3x3x1 hole in the far end.

7. Fill the hole with TNT.

8. Cover the top with blocks from the surroundings.

9. Place the sand or gravel on the side of the hole where the TNT is.

10. Place a piston facing the sand or gravel.

11. Place 1 redstone dust leading from the piston.

12. Place a lever next to the redstone.

The player will think all the lever does is move sand. If he/she pulls it the sand will fall on the wood pressure plate and break, and since items power wood plates it will power the TNT. Kaboom.

Don`t pull the lever! (or push the button, etc...)

I`ve designed the concept of this trap - called Don`t Pull the Lever! - so that it can be easily wired up to a variety of different things.

The basis of this trap is as follows: On (say) a factions smp server you have a traitor new to your faction who tries to steal the faction valuables. They go into the valuables room. They see your chest blocked by a block above it. Next to the chest is a lever and a sign saying "Pull lever to lift block above chest up" or something convincing. They flick the lever - which they THINK will let them open the chest. Instead, it activates lava Lava Transparency Yes Luminance Yes, 15 Blast resistance 500 Tool Renewable No Stackable N/A Flammable No Drops None Data values Flowing Lava dec: 10 hex: A bin: 1010 Still Lava dec: 11 hex: B bin: 1011 Name Flowing Lava flowing_lava Still minecraft coming from the ceiling/the floor retracting/ suffocating gravel Gravel Transparency No Luminance No Blast resistance 3 Tool Renewable No Stackable Yes (64) Flammable No Drops Gravel (90%) Flint (10%) Data value dec: 13 hex: D bin: 1101 Name gravel Gravel is a block that is affected minecraft or sand Sand Transparency No Luminance No Blast resistance 2.5 Tool Renewable No Stackable Yes (64) Flammable No Experience Smelted: 0.1 Drops Itself Data values Sand dec: 120 hex: C0 bin: 11000 Red Sand dec: 121 hex: C1 bin: 11001 Name sand This minecraft /a light... basically it can activate anything that can be turned on by pulling a single lever. Simple tree trap

You will need: 1 wooden pressure plate, 1 weak block that can easily be destroyed, like wood-based blocks, and as much TNT as you want

Find the tree you want to set up and destroy the wood on the bottom along with a 4 block deep hole underneath. Place TNT at the bottom, then your block, then the pressure plate. When someone breaks the bottom block of wood, it will fall on the pressure plate and blow up the TNT. It might not always work, as someone could break a different wood block on the tree. The drop could also be collected by the player, so a trap using the block`s absence instead of the drop`s presence would be best if possible, for example if the tree is touching a 2-block-high wall then the bottom block of it could be replaced with an inverter mechanism and death mechanism and the block below the tree could be replaced with a Redstone Torch Redstone Torch Transparency Yes Luminance Yes, 7 (when on) Blast resistance 0 Tool Any tool Renewable Yes Stackable Yes (64) Flammable No Drops Itself Data values See Data values Name See Data values This article minecraft .

Build a house out of any weak material that easily breaks near an explosion, then cover it with TNT. Put another layer of the material you built the house, and it`s almost done. Put two iron doors and stone pressure plates or buttons ONLY in the entrance. Put one TNT below each pressure plate, then a clearly visible chest or diamond blocks inside to lure people. When people see the chest, they will attempt to enter the house. When they step on the plate, it will trigger the TNT, causing the victim to get stuck in the house and die from the resulting explosion.

Simple capture trap - the concept of imprisonment

First, make a long passage that is 2 blocks high, 1 block wide and five or more blocks long that should be in a cave. Fill it in at the end, so your target player should mistake it for a mine/dungeon. In the middle, place a pressure plate and redstone on both sides. The blocks on either sides shouldn`t be obsidian. Under the block of choice, should be a piston (sticky if you want to use it again). Then place a tempting sign on the end of the passage that says "Diamond Mine" or "Danger: Do Not Enter". People can`t resist what`s bad for them, after all. The target should go in, step on the pressure plate, and get trapped when the entrance/exit becomes 1 by 1 and too small for the player or mob to get out of. Check it every now and then and if there is a player/mob stuck in there, shoot with a bow or put lava in it. If you want to use it again, remove the lava, and put a lever next to the pushed up block and pull it. This only works with sticky pistons, so be warned. Now, claim your loot and walk away. If you want to prevent tunneling, place lava behind the wall. Or after the subject has been trapped, they could be pushed using water into a lava pit.

Super greed trick - the concept of trickery

Dig a hole 24 blocks down. Put some sort of killing mechanism at the bottom(eg. cactus, mobs, lava, piston traps)Then place a block at the top. After that, put a sign saying "Diamonds/Emeralds Below!". Then your victim will destroy the block and fall down. Note: This trap is quite obvious, especially if placed in unlikely locations, and may not work with experienced players. Also, don`t forget to put a killing mechanism down there because if the victim is wearing feather-falling boots... Oops. You are definitely in trouble!

Super greed trick 2.0

Do everything above, but add a pressure plate with at least 10 TNT.

Minecart from hell - the concept of creating a false sense of security (For Griefers)

Create a 24 blocks or higher tower and create a room at the top. Put stairs to the room on the tower. Make a hole 1x1 at the bottom. Put some rails that end at the hole. Make a simple house beneath the tower. Put a hole on the roof. Remember, the hole on the tower must be right above the roof hole on the house. Put a block then a powered rail beneath the roof hole. Make a tunnel with normal rails and break one of the rails. Now, go to the tower and put a minecart on the rail. Push that cart to hole and the cart falls to the house tunnel on the powered rail. Put a button and redstone wire connecting to the powered rail. Wait until someone goes inside your house, looking for a hidden mine or a chest. The uninvited guest will ride the minecart and push the button. The cart will keep moving until the unconnected rails and surprise, he/she died with no reason as the minecart stops. Another way to kill griefers with minecarts is by making a rail to a simple wooden house, where the chest is easily seen from the tracks. Then put a detector rail in front of the door. Put redstone leading from the detector rail to the door. The griefer will think it opens the door. Put TNT under the block the redstone is on. When the griefer in the minecart goes over the detector rail at the end of the rail in front of the house, the redstone will get powered activating the TNT below, this will blow up your unwelcome guest.

TNT minecart bomb

If you want to add some more power to a TNT trap, try replacing the TNT with a lot of TNT Minecarts. Since you can easily condense them down into a small space, it can be good when you need to make a design more compact. You can either choose to put them on an activator rail, or to put a piston beside the rail. I prefer the second option, because disturbing a cluster of TNT Minecarts will often cause them to detonate instantly!

A sticky situation - the concept of quirks as trap mechanics

You will need (for 1 trap, you might want more for better results):

  • Soul Sand- 15 blocks

First, make a 1x3 hole in the ground. On the edge, build 3 blocks high (later you will destroy these). Now make an outline of it, but on the level you just created. If you are on a flying server, you might want to add a roof, which is an extra 3 to 12 blocks of Soul Sand. When your trap is complete, human-sized mobs - such as zombies and skeletons - or other people will walk into your trap and can`t walk out. Also, if you place ice under the soul sand, mobs and people will move even slower due to the properties of ice.

This trap works best on PVP/griefing servers. Make a box home from planks, with a door and a pressure plate outside. Under the pressure plate, put as much TNT as you wish. Place a sign outside that says something like "please don`t grief my home thx." Griefers or robbers can`t stand not griefing a house like this. They will probably walk through the door, trigger the TNT, and blow themselves to the moon! The painting - the concept of treachery

This is a very easy to create trap, requiring 2-3 wool, and a few wood, plus a pickaxe and shovel. Everyone knows the old secret passage behi
