Painting

Properties

Being an entity, paintings can simultaneously exist in the same space as blocks such as water or torches. Specifically, they can share the space with any block whose collision box does not intersect its hitbox.

Players and mobs are able to walk through paintings, as long as the blocks supporting the painting allow it. Light propagates through paintings as well.

Paintings are non-flammable.

Trivia

  • In Minecraft Indev, the Painting had an old crafting recipe. It was crafted by using eight Wood Planks and a piece of Wool in the middle.
  • Paintings are randomly generated when placed, and can vary in size greatly. However, if placed on a wall that is too crowded, none of the really big paintings will generate there.
  • Paintings can be knocked off of a surface by throwing snowballs at or shooting arrows at them.
  • The texture that the painting has in the back is actually the Wood Planks texture, but it has been darkened slightly.
  • One of the paintings is called bomb in the game files, because it`s a painting of the Bomb map from the video game, "Counter Strike".
  • One of the paintings is called Donkey Kong in the game files, because it`s a painting of the video game, "Donkey Kong".
  • In Multiplayer, if a player is standing behind a painting, then the other players will not see the the player`s nametag.
  • The painting called Seaside has been changed slightly. In Minecraft Indev, the plant in the painting was dark green, but in Minecraft Alpha, it changed to have a colorful plant.
  • The painting called Stage has been changed slightly. In Minecraft Indev, the spider in the painting was very small, but in Minecraft Alpha, it was changed to a bigger spider.
  • There are four 2x2 painting that are currently unused in Minecraft: Pocket Edition. They can only be found in the game files.
  • There are 30 paintings in total, including the currently unused paintings.

Trivia

  • On 26 Apr. 2011 Notch stated that the auto mapping code can be used to share custom paintings and books in the future.
  • In SMP, if a player is standing behind a painting, other players do not see their name.
  • Paintings are not actually attached to the wall. If you look closely, there is a gap between the painting and the wall.
  • The texture on the back of a painting is the same texture of wooden planks, darkened slightly.
  • On Console Edition, paintings and item frames share the same spawn limit.

Crafting

Ingredients Crafting Crafting is the method by which many blocks, tools, and materials are made in Minecraft. In order to craft something, players must move items from their inventory to a crafting grid. A 2×2 crafting grid minecraft recipe

Breaking

To remove a painting from a wall, attack it, break one of its supporting blocks, cover one square of it with a block, hit it with an arrow, egg, ender pearl, snowball, or fire charge, or subject it to an explosion. The painting will then drop as an item. Arrows that hit paintings will disappear.

Placement

Paintings can be placed on the sides of solid blocks Comparison of the solid stone and liquid water blocks Solid blocks are a category of block. Contents 1 Properties 2 List of solid blocks 2.1 List of non-solid blocks 3 Height 4 Video 5 History minecraft , or signs if you hold shift. The other blocks holding the painting can be almost anything. There are several different sizes of painting (see below). When placed, a painting will check for the largest amount of space it has. It then chooses a random painting of that size. Therefore, the player can add blocks around the painting to ensure it is the size wanted.

Canvases

There are 26 paintings in the game. These are mostly based on paintings by Kristoffer Zetterstrand, who also created the Minecraft versions.

    Usage/Placement

To place an image, select it in the inventory bar, and right-click a wall of blocks that is not obstructed by any blocks making it "un-flat" (with the exception of torches, the painting will lay under them). The image will be displayed randomly. Depending on the size of the wall the image can be anywhere from a 1x1 (one block) size, up to a whopping 4x4. In 1.12 (upcoming), paintings fit the largest space possible, making it more likely to get the desired painting (by using scaffolding to limit the area). They are not always even though. Some may be 1x2 or 2x1 while others are 4x3. Each of these sizes has different images that can be displayed, so the user may want to retry several times before obtaining the one that is desired.

    Bugs

    • As of 1.5 there is a "glitch" that when a painting is placed it will appear for about 1 tick then disappear. This glitch was fixed in 13w11a.
    • Paintings can be walked through, allowing the player to cover up passageways.
    • Paintings placed near torches may expand through them leaving the torch to appear stuck on the painting instead of the wall.
    • If a painting is hit with water, it will not be destroyed, but it will darken.
