and similar blocks will not visually connect with barriers. Barriers interact with blocks and mobs as a solid block. All dependent blocks can be placed on a barrier, such as torches or redstone, and it will suffocate mobs. Mobs cannot spawn on barriers.

Like a few blocks, such as the command block, for example, the Barrier block can only be obtained via commands. By doing the command: /give @p minecraft:barrier
₠(Note: one does not have to put Minecraft with barrier) will give the player the amount of Barrier blocks put in the command. Barrier blocks are unobtainable in Survival unless "cheats" are enabled and used.
