Notes
The card art The art used on Hearthstone s cards is one of the most striking and memorable aspects of the game s artistic design. These small yet detailed images are often taken from far larger pieces of art, with seen in Hearthstone often differs substantially from the full art from which it is taken. In most cases the subject is focused upon to the exclusion of surrounding elements, which in some cases add quite a different context to the scene in question. In others the subject is itself taken from a background element, rather than the focus of the original art.
Art is usually modified to some degree in order to adapt it for Hearthstone. Often this involves only a slight touchup or recolour, but in many cases more substantial changes are made, with entire elements added or painted out. New visual effects are often added, for additional flair or emphasis on a particular element of the art. Golden cards featureSpecial attraction even greater innovation, transforming each static 2D image into a recoloured, animated, moving display, often featuring entirely new elements. For a discussion of how art is adapted for golden cards, see Card art#Golden cards.
Art is also often shared between multiple cards, especially when one card summons another. The full art for Old Murk-Eye is a good example, containing within it the card art for not only Old Murk-Eye, but also Murloc Scout and Murloc Raider. In some cases the exact same card art is used for multiple cards, such as Murloc Scout and Murloc, or the various Treants, although this is usually limited to uncollectible cards or those outside regular play, such as boss or Tavern Brawl cards.
The relationship of full art to the Hearthstone card for which it is eventually used is an interesting one. In many cases the art was created for the TCG The WoW TCG logo The World of Warcraft Trading Card Game (WoW TCG), commonly referred to as "the TCG", is a physical collectible card game based on World of Warcraft, first released in 2006. On to represent a specific card, but its use in Hearthstone may repurpose it entirely, turning a druid weapon into a shaman spell, or an image of Gul`dan into a servant of Nefarian.
