Vision

Info

Vision changes around while the hero moves.

Vision describes what a unit can and cannot see from its current location and state. Places a unit cannot see are filled with the Fog of War, a dark mist that hides units inside of it. Invisible units cannot be seen even when outside of the Fog of War, unless they are spotted by a source of True Sight Invisibility is a status effect which makes units and heroes not appear on their opponent s screen or minimap, and makes them unable to be targeted directly by the enemy. All units on your team share vision, which means that if a unit can see through the Fog of War, all allies can as well. Fog of War

All areas outside of friendly vision are constantly covered by the "Fog of War". Any non-friendly units within the Fog of War cannot be seen or targeted (it is effectively invisible), however they can still be hit by non-targeted spells. To reveal units in the Fog of War, an allied unit must gain vision in that area. Units cannot see areas that are on higher elevations than them, while units on higher ground receive unrestricted vision below. Additionally, any ranged units attacking an enemy on higher elevation have a 25% chance to miss their target.

Trees

Trees Trees on the Radiant and Dire sides of the map. Trees are a terrain feature in Dota 2. They make up a large amount of the map, and are very prominent in the forests that dota2 also block vision, and can be used to escape enemies by running through small gaps in them (known as "juking"). When trees are cut down or destroyed, they no longer block vision.

Day and night vision ranges

Most units have different vision ranges for the day and night cycles. Generally, units see a lot farther during the day than they do at night.

Heroes

Most heroes have 1800 units of vision during the day, and 800 at night, though there are several exceptions. This makes ganking a lot more viable at night, because heroes can get much closer without being detected. Flying vision

Flying vision gives unrestricted vision in an area, so it is not blocked by trees or obstacles and can see all elevations.

Ground vision

Also known as normal unit vision, standard vision, and hero vision. This type of vision is blocked by trees, other obstacles, and elevation. All heroes have ground vision by default.

Sources of ground vision

Shared vision

Some spells share the vision of an enemy unit with your team. Most of these spells allow you to see what the enemy unit sees and some only provide vision over the enemy hero model.

Sources of shared vision

Fog of War

All areas outside of allied vision become covered in the fog of war. Any enemy units within the fog of war cannot be seen or targeted, unless affected by Bloodseeker`s Thirst in which you can.

To reveal units in the fog of war, an allied unit or ability must gain vision in that area. Observer Wards can provide vision in a large area to their team. The Roshan pit has a deep fog that cannot be seen into unless there is an ally inside it or a unit has flying vision.

If a unit in the fog of war attacks an enemy that does not have vision of them, the attacker will be revealed for a few seconds.

Day and Night cycle

Most units have different vision ranges for the day and night cycle. Generally, units see a lot farther during the day than they do at night. Most heroes have 1800 vision range during the day, and 800 at night, though there are several exceptions. This makes ganking more viable at night, because heroes can get much closer without being detected.

Below is a table of all exceptions to the 1800 / 800 hero vision rule:

Hero Day Vision Night Vision Notes
Batrider 1200 800 Permanent
Bounty Hunter 1800 1000 Permanent
Luna 1800 1800* Luna obtains 1800 night vision permanently after leveling Lunar Blessing
Lycan 1800 1800* Lycan obtains 1800 night vision while Shapeshift is active
Night Stalker 1200 1800 Permanent
Slark 1800 1800 Permanent
Sniper 1800 1100 Permanent
Winter Wyvern 1800 1200* Winter Wyvern obtains 1200 night vision while Arctic Burn is active

Vision Types

Ground Vision

This is the default for most units. They cannot see areas that are on higher ground than themselves, and units on higher ground receive unobstructed vision below. Trees will also block vision, and can be used to escape enemies by running through small gaps in between them. Trees can be cut down or destroyed to longer block vision.

Sources of ground vision from spells:

Flying Vision

This provides unobstructed vision at all levels of elevation. A unit with flying vision can see the high ground above them, and will not have their vision blocked by trees.
