Runes are special boosters that spawn on the game map Overhead view of the game map as of version 7.06. See the in-game map. For locations in Dota 2 lore, see World Map. Spawning
- Bounty Runes spawn at 0:00 on the game clock, and every two minutes after that.

- Power-up Runes spawn randomly at one of two locations in the river until the 40 minute mark, after which they spawn simultaneously at both locations.
- Before 40 minutes: The same Power-up Rune cannot spawn twice in a row.
- After 40 minutes: The same Power-up Rune cannot spawn at once at both locations or twice in a row at the same location.
- Unused runes will be replaced by a new rune at the next spawn time.

- A stored rune can be used later by activating the Bottle.

- Bounty Runes cannot be stored in a Bottle that has full charges. Instead, it will be automatically consumed upon pickup.
- Runes can be stored in the Bottle for up to two minutes, after which they are automatically activated.
- Stored runes persist through death, but the automatic activation timer does not pause.
- If the owner is dead when the timer runs out, the rune is destroyed and grants no bonuses.
- When the Bottle is filled with a rune, picking up a second rune will consume/activate the new rune right away, not replace the existing rune in the Bottle.

- Since runes do not count as units, destroying or denying “ Play Denied! Enemies earn reduced experience if the a rune neither counts as a last hit, nor interacts with any abilities in the game.
- Runes have selection boxes with higher priority over units, meaning that if a unit is standing over a rune, the mouse cursor highlights and selects the rune first.
- This only applies to actions that can target runes, such as moving or attacking. Actions that cannot target runes will still target the unit first.
- Currently, the only ability that can directly target runes is Tiny`s Toss.
- To collect a rune, the hero must be within 128 units of the rune, but they do not need to be facing the rune to activate it.

Bottling
When a hero is carrying a Bottle, taking the rune will cause it to be stored in the bottle instead of being used. The rune can be used at any time by activating the bottle. Bottling a rune will not prevent a new one from spawning. If the rune is not consumed in 2 minutes from picking it up, it will activate automatically. After spending a stored Powerup Rune, the bottle is refilled to max charges. Bottling a bounty rune only replenishes to 2 bottle charges, leaving it unmaxed. If the bottle is at max charges, the bounty rune will be used instead of stored.
Couriers cannot bottle runes, and bottles with a stored rune are unshareable and undroppable.
Powerup Runes
There are several types of Powerup Runes, each giving you a different and powerful effect for a short duration. The buffs granted by runes can be dispelled.
Double Damage Rune
Double Damage Ability: No Target Affects: Self When activated, the Rune of Double Damage increases base attack damage.
