Counter-Strike
Ninjas in Pyjamas was originally founded in June 2000, by Tommy "Potti" Ingemarsson and Tootzi, as a LAN-based Counter-Strike clan but solidified in 2001 after several lineup changes and name changes. In the early days, NiP`s crowning achievement was winning the 2001 Cyberathlete Professional League World Championships, a tournament considered as the pioneer professional video game tournaments , after a very close final with rival team X3. Soon after this they had trouble finding sponsors needed to travel to offline tournaments, but the solution came when they joined the prominent e-sports organization SK Gaming. Under SK Gaming they were known by the names SK Scandinavia and SK Sweden, and as SK they continued their success and became a one of the most dominant forces in Counter-Strike. The prize money from their tournament victories in 2003 totaled approximately 170,000 U.S. dollars, a very large sum at that time in esports.
In spite of this, the Counter-Strike team was unable to reestablish their former dominance of the old NiP and previous SK team, and as a result HeatoN and Potti went inactive after a time. After playing laying a couple more tournaments NiP finally disbanded in 2007, with players moving on to attempt new things. This dissolution seemed permanent, as most of the former players retired from the scene, and many thought the Ninjas in Pyjamas would never be seen again.
Emil "HeatoN" Christensen, together with co-player and friend Tommy "Potti" Ingemarssen as well as managing directors Peter Hedlund and Victor Lindqvist reformed NiP as a Swedish stock company in 2005. The reformed NiP continued their participation in international tournaments, placing high in many of the events they attended. The group also managed to take the company to the next level by landing some of the biggest sponsorship deals in the scene at the time. The organization managed to get about 100 000 members on their international e-sport community website in Europe during their first two years and was also the first non Asian Counter-Strike team to enter the Asian market, and within six months they had about 90 000 members on their Asian website.
CS:GO and LoL
With the release of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive in 2012, rumors started spreading that NiP was to be reformed by their former star player and eight-time world champion, Emil "HeatoN" Christensen. On the 10th of August 2012 Ninjas in Pyjamas announced their comeback to the scene with the release of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. With a team consisting of a mix of well known Counter-Strike stars Christopher "GeT_RiGhT" Alesund , Patrik "f0rest" Lindberg and Richard "Xizt" Landstr⸣⸖m together with Counter Strike: Source players Adam "Friberg" Friberg and Robin `Fifflaren Johansson, the new chapter of professional Counter-Strike couldn`t have gone better for NiP. In their first 6 months of playing, NiP did not lose a single map on LAN, winning the first ten offline tournaments they played in, going 87:0 in offline maps played, and finishing top four in the total 16 tournaments they played in and. As they won all the events they attended including DreamHack Winter and ESWC 2012, the Ninjas were crowned the first ever World Champion in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. On the 4th of April the first offline map loss occurred on LAN at the StarLadder StarSeries V CS:GO Finals which also meant the first time NiP did not win the tournament they attended.
On the 22nd of May 2013 Ninjas in Pyjamas opened a new chapter in their history books, with the arrival of a League of Legends team. Initially featuring a very promising lineup, the team went through some changes after some mixed results. In May of 2014 the organization released their LoL, picking up a a new roster that did have some success, winning DreamHack Summer 2014 and he second EU Challenger Series Spring Tournament and five second place finishes in Premier Tournaments in 2014, as well as some wins in smaller tournaments. The different team lineups were however never able to match neither the success of the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive squad, which did seem as an almost impossible task in a scene as saturated as the LoL scene, nor the potential of the roster of what some considered somewhat of a "dream team" in the summer of 2014. In September of 2014 the team left the organization after internal issues withing the team.
Dota 2
On the first of January 2015, the NiP announced their new Dota 2 division, picking up the roster of up-and-coming Swedish team LAJONS, featuring former Fnatic carry player Era as well as Apemother, jonassomfan, Sealkid and Handsken, all of them with a history of playing Heroes of Newerth. After stating they have kept tabs on the Dota scene for some time the NiP organization had the following statements made in the aouncement:
We continue on our path to build an eSport powerhouse based in the Nordics. Swedish and Scandinavian eSports have always been successful and in the frontline of development in the world of Gaming. We are proud to see that so many eSport-stars want to join the NiP colors and represent us on the global scene. I’m personally impressed with the players in Lajons who have come so far without any backing at all. Now we will do everything in our power to give them the best possible conditions to grow with the NiP organisation.Per Lilliefelth, CEO of NiP
NiP is the oldest and biggest eSports team in northern Europe and we felt it was time to once again enter another discipline than CS:GO where we have been dominating the scene for so long. Dota is the perfect eSports title for us to work with and we will be in this for the long run. I am looking forward to seeing where this lineup can take us, and I put my faith in Era (and the boys) to lead the way.Emil "HeatoN" Christensen
After a series of disappointing results and failing to qualify for the Frankfurt Major, NiP announce that they are dropping their Dota 2 roster. There was to be no replacement for the team.
In January 2017, after staying out of the Dota 2 scene for more than a year, NiP announce their return, picking up the remains of former Escape Gaming. Joining captain syndereN, the team features Era, qojqva, Trixi, and H4nn1. syndereN, Era, and qojqva previously played together on Escape Gaming, with Trixi joining late 2016 as stand-in.
“I am thrilled to join Ninjas in Pyjamas. It is one of the most renowned organizations with a rich history. Playing with such a name is a great opportunity, but also a responsibility; it comes with high expectations and therefore I`m happy to have formed a team of such experienced and proven players with great synergy to deliver. Together with NiP, we plan to become a top contender for the year. We`ve already progressed a lot in our early practice and I only see us improving as the year progresses.“Troels "synderen" Nielsen, Team Captain
“2016 was an exciting year for Ninjas in Pyjamas with great developments both in- and out of game. As we enter 2017, we are eager to continue our expansion to further manifest ourselves as a multi-gaming organization competing across several large titles with top tier players and lineups. We are therefore extremely excited to bring the majority of an iconic Dota 2 lineup back together as we announce our return to the scene. We are happy to have five extremely professional, experienced and talented players to share this journey with in order to provide our fans with more great NiP moments and experiences. Welcome Troels, Adrian, Kalle, Max and Kai to the Ninjas in Pyjamas family, we are looking forward to seeing them competing carrying the NiP name and legacy.”Hicham Chahine, CEO of NiP
